HELP NOW WITH EATING DISORDERS

You may have come to this page because you are suffering from an eating disorder (or fear that you might be). Or you could be worried, seeing signs or symptoms in a partner, family member, daughter or son. Yes, men can suffer too – social pressures are creating false standards in body image for males as well as females. Anorexia or bulimia can make life not worth living and sometimes result in death. Less common disorders such as orthorexia (very rigid rules around eating) and athletic anorexia (compulsive exercise) can be equally disabling.

Binge/compulsive eating is common. Overeating might provide comfort or relief from stress. Often someone is also suffering from depression.

The most important thing that counselling provides is a place of safety, an environment where you can talk about your life knowing that there will never be judgement. If you are comfortable I will gently explore what you want from your life, how you would like it to change and what resources are available to you to help move in the direction you wish to go. An important part of the process will be learning to recognise and value your own strengths and positive qualities. If you decide a family member, friend or partner can play an important part in positive change you might want to bring them along for a session or two.

Counselling and psychotherapy can help us understand why we choose to follow particular paths in life. If difficult circumstances such as bereavement, humiliation by others or abuse have been a cause, then therapy can help healing and growth. Within the safety of the counselling room you may feel more free to talk about things you have had to keep secret. The support of a therapist can make it easier to fight self-harming behaviours such as cutting. Together we can explore ideas such as “thinspiration” and “pro-ana” and whether or not these ways of thinking are helpful to you. Always without judgement.

MY GUARANTEE

As a counsellor I know that I can help most people who come to see me, with a wide range of issues. However, the single most important factor in successful therapy is the relationship between therapist and client. You cannot know whether you will have that necessary confidence and trust until we meet. If you end your first session feeling that you haven’t been helped at all and you do not wish to return then tell me. I will gladly refund the initial fee in full, without qualification.
